Couple Accused of Having Sex

Two people were arrested Wednesday morning for allegedly having sex in public in The Villages.

According to a spokesman with the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were called to El Camino Real in the Lady Lake section of The Villages at about 8:40 a.m., after receiving a call from someone who said “naked people were making out” near a golf cart path.

According to an arrest affidavit, deputies observed a 40-year-old woman lying on an electrical box with no shorts or underwear on, with her shirt pulled up and her breasts exposed. A 47-year-old man was allegedly seen standing in front of her with his sexual organ exposed.

Deputies asked the pair to put their clothes back on.

Police claim that the man confessed to having sex with the woman in public because they had no other place to go.

The man and the woman, both of Lady Lake, were charged with indecent exposure and breach of the peace. They were both placed taken to the Sumter County jail with bail set at $1,500.

While many people consider indecent exposure charges more of an annoyance than a real criminal act, Florida law allows for aggressive prosecution and harsh penalties. While not considered as serious as other sex crimes offenses, the penalties that can accompany a conviction are still severe. Unfortunately, many people arrested for indecent exposure are not arrested based on fact, but based on the opinion of law enforcement. Different from other criminal or sexual charges that may be based on solid evidence, an indecent exposure charge is often open for interpretation. That is why you must protect your innocence, as a conviction could leave you facing hefty fines and time behind bars.

Even worse, a conviction could mean you will be ordered to register as a sex offender for life, just like offenders who have been convicted of much more serious sex offenses such as rape, sexual assault or child molestation.
