Mount Dora Man Killed in Collision on U.S. 441

A 41-year-old Mount Dora doctor was killed the last week of December in a two-vehicle collision on U.S. Highway 441 that caused backups and delays in traffic for nearly eight hours, according to police.

The doctor died from injuries suffered as a result of the crash. Leesburg police claim the man was driving a 2007 Hummer H3 southbound on U.S. Highway 441 when the vehicle collided with semi-trailer in the left lane, driven by a 53-year-old Wisconsin man.

The accident occurred around 6:38 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 30. According to police, a preliminary investigation shows that the man driving the 2013 Kenworth tractor-trailer pulled out of a furniture store on U.S. 441 into the path of oncoming traffic.

The collision resulted in the left and center lanes of southbound U.S. 441 to be shut down for about eight hours.

The last week of 2013 was deadly on roads in Lake County, with three other fatalities reported.

A 66-year-old Leesburg man died when he lost control of his minivan on County Road 44. An unidentified motorcyclist and a bicyclist died in separate crashes with vehicles on County Road 42 and State Road 40.

Some of the busiest and most traveled roads are located in or near The Villages throughout Lake, Sumter and Marion County, including U.S. Highway 441, U.S. Highway 27, U.S. Highway 301, County Road 42 and County Road 466A. These roadways are frequent locations of car and truck accidents. 18-wheelers weighing 80,000 pounds or more have the ability to easily overpower cars, SUVs, motorcycles, bicyclists and pedestrians. Sadly, trucking accidents often result in very serious injuries, including traumatic brain injuries and head trauma, spinal cord injuries, broken bones, internal injuries, burn injuries and even death.
