Two Store Clerks Nabbed in Sumter County Alcohol Sting

Two store clerks were arrested off warrants earlier this month for allegedly selling alcohol to a minor stemming from a sting conducted by the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office to keep teens away from alcohol as high school homecomings approach.

In an effort to reduce teenage drinking, the department conducted a sting targeting 15 stores in August. The operation involved sending a minor into the store with the intentions of purchasing alcohol.

The two clerks are accused of selling beer during the sting. They were both taken to Sumter County jail with bail set at $500.

Under Florida law, it is illegal to sell alcohol to anyone who is under the age of 21 years old. In the state of Florida, selling alcohol to minors is classified as a second-degree misdemeanor punishable by up to 60 days in jail, $500 in fines, community service and a suspension of your driver’s license. While this is not a serious crime, as you can see the consequences of a conviction could negatively affect your life. By obtaining legal representation as soon as possible, you may be able to avoid the criminal consequences that come along with a conviction.

These charges usually result from an undercover sting operation conducted by local police. These undercover traps usually involve a minor, who is working undercover, who will try and purchase alcohol or even approach an adult and ask them to buy the alcohol for them. Once the unsuspecting individual goes through with the transaction, an arrest is made. An innocent mistake can turn into criminal charges in a matter of minutes.
